Heliconia (Heliconiaceae, order Zingiberales) are among the most provocative of all exotic flowering plants. Stunning diversity in both color and form make this genus the very essence of the tropics. There are around 200 species native primarily to the American tropics with its center of diversity in the northwestern Andes. Six species are endemic to the South Pacific region from Samoa to Sulawesi. Represented here are 102 forms, including 83 species and five natural hybrids. Heliconia have co-evolved with hummingbirds, exchanging nectar and pollen, reciprocating flower and bill morphology. They provide microhabitats for frogs, bats, and insects. Despite the beauty and ecological importance of this genus, habitat loss is placing these and many other tropical species at risk of extinction. Conservation efforts and continued awareness are needed to preserve these fascinating plants for future generations.

Poster includes:
• 102 Heliconia, including 85 species and five natural hybrids
• Plant photo with scientific name, authority, common name
• Suggested species conservation statues based on International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria
