Marantaceae are prized for their intricately patterned foliage and large colorful blooms. The name ‘prayer plants’ refers to their daily ritual of opening their leaves to the sunlight and folding them upward at night, resembling praying hands. The Marantaceae are the second largest family in the order Zingiberales, with about 30 genera and over 550 species. Although members of this family are native throughout the tropics, majority of species are found in the neotropics with its center of diversity in Brazil.
