Tapeinochilos (Costaceae, order Zingiberales) are rare tropical flowering plants. This genus comprises of 16 species, with its center of diversity in New Guinea. They have either terminal or basal inflorescences with small tubular flowers that are pollinated by sunbirds. Although research on these plants is limited, conservation efforts are needed to preserve these curious plants for future study.
